Los últimos meses del año setenta y tres fueron muy intensos para mí. El nueve de diciembre sería la primera vez que votaría en unas elecciones presidenciales, las cuartas para el país desde que en 1958 se había restablecido de nuevo la Democracia.

Por donde uno anduviera el ambiente era de fiesta, los diferentes candidatos no paraban de hacer eventos públicos, grandes concentraciones a las que asistían entusiastas seguidores. 

Por aquellos años todavía había mucho entusiasmo por las garantías que la Democracia ofrecía para la vida de las personas. La gente de los diferentes partidos convivía en un clima de total tolerancia, como si fueran fanáticos de los grandes equipos rivales del beisbol venezolano: Caracas y Magallanes.

En aquel momento yo estaba en el medio de mi carrera universitaria. Dos años antes, en el 71,  había comenzado en el Pedagógico de Caracas, de donde egresé como Profesor.

Los estudios del Pedagógico eran muy, pero muy exigentes,  había que dedicar muchas horas para preparar los contenidos que cada profesor asignaba. El único recurso para prepararnos eran los libros, por lo que las bibliotecas siempre estaban abarrotadas de estudiantes, abrían muy temprano y cerraban bastante tarde. A veces uno iba y los libros estaban en préstamo, y si no había plata para comprarlos había que buscar un amigo que los tuviera.

Un amigo y yo habíamos diseñado un plan para salir adelante. Yo compraba algunos libros y él otros, y nos reuníamos alternativamente en su casa o en la mía  para estudiar. 

A mí me encantaba ir a estudiar a la casa de mi amigo. Él vivía a pocas cuadras de la entrada de los Magallanes de Catia, en el Oeste de la ciudad. Uno de los motivos por los que me gustaba ir a ese sitio era porque cada cierto tiempo hacíamos una pausa en los estudios para ir a visitar a un amigo de mi amigo, que estaba iniciando sus estudios de trombón.

Aquel muchacho había recibido el trombón como herencia de un tío, que según él nos contaba había sido  un gran trombonista. Del tío también había heredado el gusto por la música de Salsa, y una de sus metas era poder interpretar con solvencia las canciones del excelente cantante y trombonista Willie Colón. 

A mí el trombón me parecía un instrumento extremadamente difícil, manejar adecuadamente la técnica del emboquillado requería mucha paciencia y dedicación. Mi mente no me daba para imaginar cómo podían regular la presión del aire para que con el movimiento de la vara lograran  sacar los sonidos, pero precisamente eso hacía que tocar aquel instrumento fuese todo un arte.

Cada visita servía para calibrar los avances de aquel muchacho con el instrumento, lo que me parecía algo  realmente mágico; pero además,  esas visitas también ampliaban  mi cultura musical. 

Ese aprendiz de trombonista era un gran conocedor de la Salsa y le encantaba hablar de música. En ese diciembre tenía mucha expectativa porque al final de año aparecería un nuevo disco de Willie Colón y Héctor Lavoe, una dupla imbatible. Nos dijo que ya se había anotado en la tienda Don Disco de Chacaito, en el Este de la ciudad,  para reservar un ejemplar de aquel acetato que llevaba por nombre: Lo Mato, que sería memorable, con canciones icónicas como  Todo tiene su final y El día de suerte.

La canción que comparto con ustedes, Calle Luna, Calle Sol,  forma parte de ese álbum “Lo Mato”,  aparecido a finales de 1973.  Fue compuesta a cuatro manos por esos dos genios de la música tropical, Willie Colón y Héctor Lavoe. La letra nos habla de la delincuencia y de las dificultades que tiene vivir en un ambiente donde “los guapos de barrio” controlan la vida.

Como suele ocurrir hay diferentes versiones sobre el origen de la canción. Unos sostienen que está inspirada en una zona del viejo San Juan de Puerto Rico, que en los años cuarenta y cincuenta fue muy peligrosa. Era un sitio de prostíbulos donde marinos procedentes de diferentes sitios solían armar peleas, que en muchos casos terminaban con fallecidos.

Pero otros dicen que no es así, que las calles, Luna y Sol, de San Juan de Puerto Rico, nunca fueron un sito tan violento. 

Los partidarios de esa teoría sostienen que el origen de la canción está en la ciudad de Ponce, donde nació Héctor Lavoe, en el mismo Puerto Rico. Allí también hay calles con ese nombre, y al parecer también fueron sitios muy violentos.

Sea como sea, lo importante es que estos dos autores  tuvieron la inspiración para componer este retrato de la vida social de mediados de los setenta. Lo narrado allí lo conocí de primera mano en algunos barrios de Caracas, quizá por eso la canción siempre me resonó cercana.

Quizá muchos de ustedes hayan escuchado este excelente tema, pónganle cuidado al Maestro Willie Colón en el trombón principal y al cantante de los cantantes, el inmortal Héctor Lavoe. Espero disfruten la canción.

The last months of the year seventy-three were very intense for me. The night of December would be the first time I would vote in a presidential election, the fourth for the country since democracy had been reestablished in 1958.

Everywhere you went the atmosphere was festive, the different candidates were holding public events, large rallies attended by enthusiastic supporters. 

In those years there was still a lot of enthusiasm for the guarantees that Democracy offered for people's lives. People from the different parties lived together in a climate of total tolerance, as if they were fans of the great rival teams of Venezuelan baseball: Caracas and Magallanes.

At that time I was in the middle of my university career. Two years earlier, in '71, I had started at the Pedagogical School of Caracas, from where I graduated as a teacher.

The studies at the Pedagogical School were very, very demanding, we had to dedicate many hours to prepare the contents that each professor assigned. The only resource to prepare ourselves were books, so the libraries were always crowded with students, they opened very early and closed very late. Sometimes you went there and the books were on loan, and if there was no money to buy them, you had to look for a friend who had them.

A friend and I had devised a plan to get ahead. I would buy some books and he would buy others, and we would meet alternately at his house or mine to study.

I loved going to study at my friend's house. He lived a few blocks from the entrance of the Magallanes de Catia, in the west of the city. One of the reasons why I liked to go there was because every once in a while we would take a break from studying to visit a friend of my friend's who was beginning his trombone studies.

That boy had received the trombone as an inheritance from an uncle, who he told us had been a great trombonist. From the uncle he had also inherited a taste for Salsa music, and one of his goals was to be able to interpret the songs of the excellent singer and trombonist Willie Colón. 

To me, the trombone seemed to be an extremely difficult instrument; to properly handle the embouchure technique required a lot of patience and dedication. My mind was not able to imagine how they could regulate the air pressure so that with the movement of the stick they could bring out the sounds, but precisely that made playing that instrument an art.

Each visit served to gauge the progress of that boy with the instrument, which seemed to me something really magical; but in addition, those visits also expanded my musical culture.
 
That apprentice trombonist was a great connoisseur of Salsa and loved to talk about music. In that December he had great expectations because at the end of the year a new album by Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe, an unbeatable duo, would be released. He told us that he had already signed up at the Don Disco store in Chacaito, in the east of the city, to reserve a copy of that acetate called Lo Mato, which would be memorable, with iconic songs like Todo tiene su final (Everything has its end) and El día de suerte (The lucky day).
